Foundation Programs
The International Foundation Year (usually abbreviated to IFY) has been developed by the Northern Consortium. It is a well-designed foundation course for Chinese High School students who wish to continue their education in one of the member universities in Britain or Australia. The goal of the IFY is to prepare students as fully as possible for success in their studies overseas. This includes academic excellence and a high level of competence in English, of course; but it also includes career-advice, cultural information and the chance for students to meet representatives from the member universities. Since it was introduced to China in 1999, the IFY program has assisted nearly 6,000 High School students to get into famous British or Australian universities, and over 25% of all Chinese High School students who are directly accepted by British Universities every year are IFY graduates.
Applicants must normally be 17 years at the start of the IFY. Usually, students should have successfully completed 12 years of school education with satisfactory passes in their leaving examinations. A minimum English language level of IELTS 5.0 (TOEFL 500) and a good level of mathematics are both required. However, there are options for students who are below this level for mathematics and English (or who have not completed 12 years of school education) whereby they may complete a one-year preparatory course or (for those just below the minimum requirement) a shorter, much more intensive preparatory course during the summer month. Study in either of these programs will help to improve both English language levels and mathematical ability.
The 12 years of school education should include senior middle school year three with passes at acceptable grades (70% and above) in all relevant subjects of the Gao Kao. Passes in Chinese language and Chinese politics are not essential for entry to the IFY.Students who have completed 11 years of school education including completion of year 11 and have achieved an average of 70%; or above in the Hui Kao examinations may enter the IFY. Passes in Chinese language and Chinese politics are not essential for entry to the IFY.
Students on the IFY can choose between two specialized study- and career-oriented streams: the Business Stream and the Science and engineering Stream. All students follow a common core curriculum.
The core curriculum: EAP, Business/Engineering specialized English, Study skills, International Cultures and so on.
Business Stream: Commercial mathematics---Mathematics, Algebra, Plane Geometry, Analytic Geometry; Data Processing and Statistics Basics, Gather and Probability; Calculus. Business Management and Economics: Commercial Organization, Exterior Business Environment, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Production and Operation, Human Resources Management, Strategy Management,Macroeconomics,Microeconomics, Study of Management, International Business andCommercial Law.
Engineering Stream: Further Mathematics---Mathematics, Algebra, Plane Geometry, Analytic Geometry; CalculusEngineering Mathematics---Vector, Power, Merit, EnergyPhysics---Mechanics; Nuclear Physics, Wave, Vibration, Optics; Electricity, Thermology, Energy Field Force.
Applicants must normally be 21 years old at the start of the program. Students in their final year of a recognized Bachelor’s degree course may undertake Grad Dip Route A in parallel with their university studies. However, successful Completion of their degree to a defined performance level would be a condition of any university entrance offer made. NB Progression opportunities will be limited for diploma holders. Students with a 3-year diploma must have successfully completed the diploma before commencing the Grad Dip. Students cannot be enrolled on the Grad Dip course if they have not completed their diploma. Any degree or diploma which has been awarded as a split qualification (e.g. the first two years done in college A, and the next two in college B) must be submitted as NSE. For both Route A and B entry, relevant work experience is highly desirable. Progression opportunities will be limited without appropriate work experience.
