A Brief Introduction to Wuhan

Wuhan is situated in the middle of Hubei Province of China, East Longitude 113°41′-115°05′, North Latitude 29°58′-31°22′.the east of Jianghan Plain, and the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and Hanshui River. The Yangtze River and Hanshui River divide Wuhan into three districts: Hankou, Hanyang and Wuchang, which are generally known as Wuhan's Three Towns.


Wuhan has a subtropical humid monsoon climate. There are sufficient rainfall and sunshine as well as four distinct seasons. The climate here is pleasant generally. In the past thirty years, the average annual rainfall is 1269mm, mainly from June to August; the annual temperature ranges from 15.8℃ to 17.5℃, the annual frost-free period lasts from 211 to 272 days and annual sunlight duration is between 1810 to 2100 hours.


Wuhan covers an area of 8494.41km2, most of which is a plain, though dotted with hills, and it has a great number of lakes and pools. Wuhan's climate is subtropical monsoon with abundant rainfall and four distinct seasons. It had a population of 7,811,900 at the end of 2003. Wuhan possesses strong economic and regional advantages. It connects the east with the west, channels the north to the south, and links rivers with seas by means of its developed water, land and air networks. From Wuhan you may also reach foreign countries such as Japan and the ROK. Some of China's metropolitan centres such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xi'an are all within a circle, of radius 1,000 km, around Wuhan. Wuhan is, therefore, the important strategic hub of Central China.


Science and Education

Wuhan is the scientific and educational centre of Central China, with 35 higher educational institutions such as Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which cover all the fields of science and technology and employ élite academics and explorers in these fields. Wuhan has built up a comprehensive scientific and educational strength and is ranked third in China with its main force: three national development zones and four scientific and technologic development parks as well as numerous enterprise start-up centres, over 350 research institutes, 1470 hi-tech enterprises, and over 400,000 experts and technicians.


Main Scenic Spots

Yellow Crane Tower East Lake Hubei Provincial Museum Guiyuan Temple
The Yellow Crane Tower, one of the Four Major Towers in China, is situated on Snake Hill in Wuchang Distict. It is said that the Yellow Crane Tower was originally built in 223 AD and has a history of over 1700 years. In the past, it was frequently destroyed by disasters and subsequently rebuilt. The new Yellow Crane Tower was completed in June 1985, and is listed by the National Tourism Administration among the National Best Forty Scenic Spots for Tourists. Located in the eastern suburbs of Wuchang, It covers East Lake, the biggest scenery tourist attraction in Wuhan and also the largest lake within a city in China. It is located on the south bank of the Yangtze and has an area of 87 square kilometres (33 square kilometres of water area). Because of its winding banks and criss-crossing ponds and brooks, it is called “a lake with 99 bays”. And it has gained a reputation as “the lake that looks like the sea, and the sea that seems like a lake”. The East Lake Scenic Area was designated by the State Council as one of the first group of key national scenic areas in 1982. Hubei Museum lies near the East Lake. It was constructed in 1953, and is a local comprehensive museum for Hubei Province. In the museum, there are over 640 first-grade historical relics and 16 national treasures, which enjoy an excellent reputation in China and abroad. Here nearly 20,000 relics are so splendidly displayed that that they dazzle people's eyes. The renowned "Chimes" Museum was opened to the public in 1999. It has became a brilliant window showing our splendid culture to the people of the world. The ancient series of bells, buried under the earth for over 2.400 years, were found in the Zhenjouyi ancient tomb in Leigudun in Suizhou. The set of tuned bells can still be played to perform all kinds of ancient songs. The temple is one of the four biggest temples for Buddhist meditation in Hubei, it is also an important Buddhist temple for the whole country. It was first built in the 15th year of Shun Zhi in the Qing Dynasty (the year 1658). The Guiyuan Buddhist chants: "With purity kept in mind, one has the thoroughfare to everywhere." All the buildings were built over a period of more than 100 years. Guiyuan Temple takes up an area of 46,900 sq.m. with a floor apace of 20,000 sq. m. There are more than 200 rooms within the temple compound and all around are luxuriant green trees and bushes, harmonizing well with the majestic towers and temples. In the Arhat Hall are 500 arhat statues, all are full-length and they are one of the main features of the temple.

Dim Sum

Hubu Alley
This is a lane with a long history, well-known for serving typical Wuhan dim sum. Because of its reputation, many people are attracted to Hubu Alley where they can sample a huge variety of delicious local snacks.
Hot dry noodles
Hot dry noodles are a unique and popular food in Wuhan. The noodles are made from carefully-selected high-grade wheat flour, fragrant with sesame butter and other spices, and they are filling: but never greasy. You will love them so much that you will want to eat them again and again.
Bean Peel
These are made from thick liquid made from beans, rice and eggs which forms the skin, which is then stuffed with glutinous rice. The stuffing takes on a golden yellow colour and there is a delicious contrast between crisp skin and soft centre. Typical stuffing includes ham, corn and sea food and this dish is unique to Wuhan.
Mianwo
Mianwo is one of Wuhan citizens' favourite breakfasts. It is made with by pouring seasoned rice-flour batter onto a concave iron scoop, sesame seeds are sprinkled onto the pan and the batter is then fried to form a round rice cake. The characteristics of this very popular dish are a crisp outside and a soft, while the middle is moderately crisp and all this at a very reasonable price.
